How children’s portraits fortify their self-esteem.

It’s common for parents to consider family photography today, capturing priceless memories in stills that can be shared with friends and family for generations to come. However, it’s not so common for parents to consider the psychological benefits that comes from proudly displaying children’s portraits right in their home.

Having explored the topic in depth, psychologists and photography experts have concluded that children’s portraits fortify a child’s self-esteem and self-worth at a young age. A particular study in 1975, conducted on fourth graders by Tulane University, found that after five weeks of providing children with Polaroid instant photos and a variety of settings and styles, there was a 37 percent increase in the students’ average self-esteem behaviors.

If you’re considering child photography for 2018, here are 4 overlooked reasons why it’s incredibly important for the development of your children:

  1. Self-Esteem: Children are visual in nature. They learn by what they observe, not by what is shouted to them from across the kitchen. Seeing a portrait of themselves, styled to their individual style, will give them a sense of importance. Their self-esteem, as proved by the study, will increase by more than a third, proud of their public display of importance right in the center of their home.
  2. Customization: Professional children’s photographers do more than just take regular portraits – we take the time to analyze the child’s natural interests, likes, and personality quirks, incorporating these elements into the final shots. This kind of versatility and customization will make the portraits even more special, really communicating to your child that who they are and what they love is important.
  3. Community: As humans, we’re social creatures. We desire to belong, no matter how old or young we are. With the rise of cyber bullying and other forms of indirect attacks on children today, it’s critical to help our children feel like they belong. One great way to do that is by proudly hanging their portrait around your home, telling them that they most certainly belong to you, your family, and your community.
  4. Security: Children feel safer in environments where their individuality and accomplishments are celebrated. If you want that environment to be your home, show your children how proud you are of them by filling the living space with their radiant smiles. They’ll feel more secure at home, in their rooms, and with you while you promote their successes and fortify their confidence over the years.

I had never thought of how displaying a child’s portrait in your home could raise their self-esteem. My wife and I have a son and we’ve yet to take family pictures together. I’ll talk to my wife and see what she thinks about taking pictures and then having our son’s portrait displayed front and center on the shelf. Thanks for this helpful advice as to why people should get family pictures taken.
